Rushall Village U11s – Playing the Right Way and Reaping the Rewards!

Outstanding Passing, Intelligent Movement and Fantastic Teamwork as Our U11s Produce Two Superb Performances Ahead of the Final Weekend!

Our Rushall Village U11s were in fantastic form this weekend, producing two excellent performances against Saint Michael’s and Willenhall in their latest round of trophy event fixtures. While both games presented very different challenges, the most pleasing aspect of the morning was the quality of football on display and the growing confidence the boys are showing in the style of play we have been working so hard to develop.

Over the past few months, this group has made tremendous progress in their understanding of the game, particularly when it comes to passing, movement, positioning and decision-making. Those improvements were clear to see throughout the morning, with the boys demonstrating an impressive level of composure and technical ability for players who are still only ten years old.

As coaches, we couldn’t be prouder of the way the team is developing. The boys are beginning to understand not just what we want them to do on the pitch, but why we want them to do it, and that is making a huge difference to the football they are producing.

Game One – Rushall Village U11s vs Saint Michael’s

Our opening fixture saw us take on a very strong Saint Michael’s side, and we knew beforehand that this would be a particularly demanding challenge. Saint Michael’s possessed some quick, strong and technically capable players, but what made the game especially enjoyable was their willingness to play good football rather than relying on long, hopeful balls forward.

Both teams looked to build attacks through intelligent passing, movement and good decision-making, which created an excellent contest and a fantastic learning opportunity for our players. It was the kind of fixture we love to be involved in because it challenges the boys to think quickly, recognise space and make good decisions under pressure.

From the opening stages, our U11s were absolutely superb. The passing was crisp and purposeful, players were constantly moving into space to provide options for their teammates, and there was a real understanding of how to work together both in and out of possession. Rather than rushing their decisions or simply clearing the ball when under pressure, the boys showed tremendous confidence in their ability to retain possession and play through different areas of the pitch.

One of the most impressive aspects of the performance was our movement without the ball. Players were recognising when to drop into space, when to make forward runs and how to create passing opportunities for their teammates. This allowed us to move the ball effectively and made it increasingly difficult for Saint Michael’s to close down our attacks.

Defensively, the boys were equally impressive. Against an opposition who were comfortable in possession, it was important that we remained disciplined, communicated effectively and understood when to press and when to hold our positions. Our ability to recognise and close passing lanes was particularly pleasing, with players working together to restrict the opposition’s options and regain possession in useful areas.

There were plenty of moments when Saint Michael’s asked questions of us, and the boys had to remain alert against their quick attacking players. However, the team’s organisation, determination and willingness to support one another were fantastic throughout. Every player understood their responsibilities, and there was a real sense of togetherness in the way we approached both attacking and defensive situations.

The game remained closely contested, with both sides demonstrating excellent technical ability and determination. Eventually, our positive approach was rewarded with a well-worked attacking opportunity that the boys converted with composure. It was a fitting moment in a performance built on patience, intelligent movement and a commitment to playing the football we have been encouraging.

What impressed the coaching team most was the maturity the boys showed throughout the fixture. Even when faced with pressure, they continued trusting one another, moving the ball confidently and making sensible decisions. They didn’t abandon their style or become distracted by the challenge in front of them; instead, they demonstrated a growing understanding of how to manage different situations within a game.

It was a fantastic performance against a very good Saint Michael’s side, and one that highlighted just how far this group has progressed in a relatively short period.

A huge thank you to Saint Michael’s for providing such a competitive and enjoyable fixture. Games played in this manner are brilliant for the development of young footballers, and both teams deserve plenty of credit for the quality of football on display.

Game Two – Rushall Village U11s vs Willenhall

Our second fixture of the morning saw us face Willenhall, who presented a very different challenge to the one we had experienced against Saint Michael’s. While our opening opponents had looked to build attacks through passing and movement, Willenhall adopted a more direct approach, regularly looking to move the ball forward quickly.

This required our players to adapt their positioning and remain alert to longer passes, while continuing to demonstrate the confidence and composure that had been so impressive in the opening game.

From the early stages, the boys showed excellent control of possession, dealing confidently with the opposition’s direct play before looking to build attacks of their own. Rather than simply returning the ball forward, our players were comfortable bringing it under control, finding teammates and working their way into attacking positions through passing and movement.

It was particularly pleasing to see how naturally the boys were beginning to apply the principles we have been working on in training. Their first touch, awareness and willingness to move into space allowed them to maintain possession for extended periods, while their understanding of when to press helped us regain the ball quickly whenever possession changed hands.

As the game progressed, the boys produced some wonderful attacking football, combining confidently in different areas of the pitch and creating numerous opportunities through intelligent movement. There was a real enthusiasm to get forward and support attacks, but importantly, the players continued to demonstrate patience and composure rather than rushing their decisions.

With the team playing confidently, the coaching staff took the opportunity to introduce some tactical changes and challenge the boys to adapt to a different formation. We adjusted our shape to operate with a single defender, encouraging more players to move into advanced positions while maintaining the same principles of passing, movement and positional awareness.

This provided an excellent opportunity for the players to develop their understanding of different roles and responsibilities. Although the formation had changed, the message remained the same: keep the ball moving, support one another, make good decisions and continue playing with confidence.

The response was fantastic.

The boys adapted extremely well, showing that they were beginning to understand the principles behind our style of football rather than simply following instructions about where to stand. They continued creating opportunities through positive passing combinations, maintained their enthusiasm when pressing and demonstrated an impressive ability to recognise space.

It was a really enjoyable performance to watch, not simply because of the attacking opportunities created, but because of the quality and understanding behind the football being played.

Credit must also go to Willenhall for their efforts throughout the fixture. Every team develops at its own pace and plays in different ways, and facing a variety of opponents provides valuable opportunities for our young players to learn how to adapt their game.

Months of Hard Work Beginning to Show

While the performances this weekend were fantastic, what makes them particularly satisfying from a coaching perspective is knowing how much work has gone into helping this group reach this stage.

Since taking responsibility for the U11s this season, we have spent the past three or four months concentrating heavily on the fundamentals of how we want to play football. Rather than focusing purely on individual matches or short-term outcomes, we have been working to establish a clear identity and style that the boys can understand, enjoy and continue developing as they progress through the age groups.

This is an approach that has been used consistently with our older teams, including the U15s, and one that we firmly believe provides young players with the foundations needed to become confident, intelligent and technically capable footballers.

Our training sessions have focused on several important areas, including playing out from the back, recognising passing options, understanding basic patterns of play, pressing effectively and learning how to create space through movement. We have also spent considerable time helping the boys understand their positioning, both when we have possession and when we are defending.

These might sound like simple aspects of football, but developing a genuine understanding of them takes time, patience and plenty of repetition, particularly with players who are still only ten years old.

There have naturally been occasions when things haven’t quite worked as we would have liked. There have been misplaced passes, mistakes when playing out from the back and moments when players have struggled to understand their positioning. However, we have remained consistent in our approach because we believe that allowing children to make mistakes and learn from them is an essential part of their development.

Rather than encouraging the boys to simply clear the ball whenever they are under pressure, we want them to have the confidence to look for a teammate, recognise space and make a decision. Sometimes those decisions won’t work, and that is absolutely fine. What matters is that they are learning to think for themselves and developing the skills needed to become better footballers.

Watching the performances against Saint Michael’s and Willenhall was particularly rewarding because so many of those principles are now becoming second nature to the players.

The boys are beginning to recognise passing opportunities without needing constant instructions from the sidelines. They are moving into space instinctively, supporting teammates more effectively and showing a much better understanding of when to press and when to remain disciplined.

Perhaps most importantly, they are playing with confidence and enjoying the football they are producing.

There is something incredibly satisfying about watching a group of ten-year-olds move the ball confidently from defence through midfield and into attacking areas using intelligent passing and movement. It demonstrates not only their technical development but also their willingness to listen, learn and trust one another.

Of course, we know there is still a huge amount for the boys to learn, and we certainly don’t expect perfection. However, the progress they have made over the past few months has been remarkable, and they deserve enormous credit for the effort they continue to put into every training session and match.

Final Weekend Ahead – Another Exciting Challenge!

With the final weekend of the trophy event approaching, our U11s now have another exciting opportunity to test themselves against some excellent opposition.

Next week, the boys are scheduled to face Walsall Phoenix, a team widely regarded as one of the strongest in the competition and among the favourites for the trophy. We know this will be a demanding fixture and that the players will need to demonstrate all the qualities they have been developing over recent months.

However, we will approach the game with exactly the same philosophy that has guided us throughout the season.

We won’t be changing our style simply because we are facing strong opposition. We want the boys to continue playing with confidence, moving the ball intelligently, supporting one another and showing the bravery to make decisions under pressure.

Fixtures against talented teams provide some of the best opportunities for young players to improve, and we want the boys to embrace the challenge rather than feel intimidated by it.

Whatever happens during the final weekend, this group has already given us an enormous amount to be proud of. Their development, teamwork, attitude and growing understanding of the game have been fantastic, and the quality of football they are now producing is a wonderful reward for all their hard work.

A huge thank you must also go to our parents and families for their continued support and encouragement. Creating an environment where children feel confident to make mistakes, try new things and enjoy their football is incredibly important, and your positivity plays a huge part in helping us achieve that.

To every single one of our U11s: you have been absolutely brilliant. The effort you are putting into training, the way you are listening and learning, and the football you are beginning to produce are a credit to you all.

Keep working hard, keep trusting one another and, most importantly, keep enjoying your football.

We’re excited to see what the final weekend brings, but whatever happens, we couldn’t be prouder of the progress this group continues to make.

Play with confidence. Play with courage. Play for each other.

Well done, boys. Up the Rushall Village! 🧡🖤🦁
