A ground with deep roots in Bloxwich football

Abbey Park has been part of the fabric of Bloxwich football since 1981. It was home to Bloxwich Town FC — one of the most ambitious grassroots clubs in the West Midlands — who moved here from the King George V Memorial Playing Fields and went on to install stands and floodlights in the early 1990s.

At their peak, Bloxwich Town were Midland Alliance champions and reached the Southern League. But financial pressures and a series of mergers and dissolutions through the late 1990s and early 2000s eventually ended senior football at Abbey Park. By 2005, the ground had fallen silent.

For nearly twenty years, the ground sat unused — overgrown, vandalised, and forgotten by the football community. It was waiting for someone to bring it back.

Dec 2024
Rushall Village FC win the bid for the lease. Abbey Park has a new home club.

A bidding war. A leap of faith. A homecoming.

By late 2024, Rushall Village FC was one year old and growing fast. Ten teams, dozens of families, and all of them sharing a pitch at Rushall Cricket Club. It was clear the club needed something of its own — a place to put down roots and build something permanent.

The search led to Abbey Park — an old football pitch in Mossley, Bloxwich, that had been unused for the better part of two decades. Despite being in a sorry state, it was exactly the right size and in exactly the right location for where the club wanted to be over the next five years.

Mark Adams and the club team jumped straight into a bidding process. In December 2024, they were awarded the lease. The ground that Bloxwich football had built and then lost was back in community hands.

The Express & Star covered the moment — calling it a club that provides “a place where kids can follow their dreams.”
