Today’s match was a real test, not just against a strong MSA side but against the elements too. Rain and wind made conditions difficult throughout, and while the game wasn’t the cleanest technically, the effort, desire, and resilience from our boys were outstanding.
We started a little tentatively, but after the first 15 minutes began to settle and grow into the contest. Our wide players started to stretch MSA, forcing their physically imposing team to drop deeper and defend. Around the 20-minute mark, we thought we’d taken the lead with a well-worked goal, only for the referee to pull play back, ruling the ball had gone out in the build-up. A frustrating moment, especially given how hard the lads had worked to create the chance.
Despite the conditions, we kept pushing. After the break, the boys really hit their stride and created four excellent chances. We struck both posts and the crossbar – including a brilliant free kick – and saw a goal-bound effort cleared off the line from a corner. It was relentless pressure, and at that point, it felt like only one team was going to win it.
Unfortunately, football can be cruel. Deep into injury time, a long ball caught us out and MSA scored with what was their only real chance of the second half. To say we were gutted for the lads is an understatement. They gave everything and deserved so much more.
There’s no doubt in my mind – if this group gets that first win, they’ll go on to take two or three more. The belief is there, the quality is there, and the performances are improving every week.
