Starting the day in 6th place and facing the team sitting 2nd in the league was always going to be a challenge – made tougher by the absence of four attacking players and no forward options on the bench. This shaped both our formation and our approach, but credit to the lads: they stuck to our core principles, building play patiently from the back rather than resorting to long balls.
The game itself was a story of momentum shifts. We had spells of excellent football followed by brief dips – a cycle that repeated throughout the match. It wasn’t down to the opposition’s strength; in fact, we felt we were the better side overall. It was simply one of those unpredictable days where the rhythm never quite settled.
The opposition took an early lead through a fortunate sequence – a long ball from their keeper found space behind our line, and a low shot across goal crept into the corner. That moment sparked a reaction. Within ten minutes, Zak delivered a superb through ball to Rio, who twisted past his marker and chipped the keeper with a composed finish. That equaliser gave us the confidence to play the kind of football we’re becoming known for.
We began to dominate possession and create chance after chance. Their keeper was outstanding, pulling off multiple saves to keep them in the game. Eventually, our persistence paid off: a flowing move from Aaron to our wingback, through midfield, out wide, and back inside saw Rio break through again – this time with a powerful strike that rippled the net. A brilliant team goal and a deserved lead.
At that point, we were in control. Riley’s pressing forced a mistake from their keeper, but in the scramble that followed, he was stamped on – a painful injury that required first aid and forced him off. With no attacking subs available, we had to shift into a more defensive shape for the final ten minutes, effectively inviting pressure.
Our back line – Erin, Miles, Josh, and Alex – were immense. They threw themselves into every challenge, and when a looping shot looked destined to cross the line, Alex sprinted back and made a heroic headed clearance off the line. It was a moment that summed up our spirit.
Sadly, with just two minutes to go, the opposition found a gap and took their chance to level the game. A gutting end to a match we deserved to win.
Still, this was a performance full of heart, discipline, and quality. With a full squad and Riley fit, we’re confident the result would’ve been different. But the boys should be proud – from our tireless midfield duo to our resilient defence and clinical attacking play, this was a team effort through and through.
Well done to every single player today. You showed what Rushall Village football is all about.
