Our U14 MJPL squad made the long journey south on Saturday to face a well-drilled Worcester Raiders side. With determination in our hearts and preparation behind us, the team was eager to secure a second three-point haul of the season.
From the first whistle, our boys were in fine form, dominating possession and showcasing the flowing, intelligent football that has become a hallmark of our club. The ball moved beautifully across the pitch, and our build-up play was a joy to watch. However, our Achilles heel remains our decision-making in front of goal. Too often, we opt for the spectacular – dancing through defenders – rather than capitalising on the space and taking the shot when it opens up. In contrast, Worcester were more clinical. Though they saw less of the ball, their counter-attacks were swift and purposeful, and they made the most of every opportunity to test our keeper.
Fortunately, our goalkeeper was in outstanding form, producing a string of crucial saves to keep us in the game. As the match edged towards full-time, it looked as though we would take home a well-earned point. But football can be cruel. A bouncing ball in the box led to a moment of misjudgement, as our keeper challenged for possession and made contact with the back of an opponent shielding the ball – resulting in a late penalty.
The game ended 1-0 in favour of Worcester Raiders. While the result was disappointing, the performance was arguably one of our strongest to date. The progress this group is making week by week is remarkable, especially given we train just once a week.
We understand that the opening phase of the season is about finding our level within a league of 92 teams. The fixtures have been tough, and next week presents another challenge as we face last season’s runners-up. But the resilience, growth, and spirit shown by this group is something to be proud of – and we’ll continue to build from here.
