A competitive and spirited league friendly today saw our U14s take on a strong Coven United side. While the match offered plenty of positives, it was unfortunately overshadowed by a referee whose decisions and manner unsettled the rhythm from the outset. It’s rare to encounter officiating that impacts the temperament of a game so early, and it’s a shame, as it clearly made our lads play with caution rather than confidence in the opening stages.
First Half: Grit Over Grace
The first half was scrappy and disjointed, with our usual composure on the ball missing. We found ourselves repeatedly launching long balls from goal kicks and turnovers, relying on pace and physicality up front to chase down opportunities. For a time, this direct approach worked. Our forwards were lively and forced Coven onto the back foot, but once they adjusted and dropped deeper, we struggled to adapt.
Despite the lack of fluidity, we carved out several promising chances and, crucially, our defensive unit stood tall. Alex and Erin were particularly impressive, reading the game well and making crucial interventions. Their positioning and timing allowed us to absorb pressure and reset, keeping the score level at the break.
Second Half: A Shift in Gear
After regrouping at half-time, the team came out with renewed intent and a much-improved style of play. The message was clear: keep the ball on the ground, play forward with purpose, and avoid unnecessary sideways or backward passes. That shift in mindset paid off almost immediately.
Just five minutes into the half, Joe picked up the ball in midfield, drove into space, and unleashed a clever strike that looped over the keeper. It was an instinctive finish that gave us the lead and lifted the entire team. With confidence flowing, we began to play with more freedom and fluidity.
Jareal added two more well-worked goals, both the result of intelligent movement and sharp link-up play with Rio, who was excellent in his role as provider. The attacking trio combined brilliantly, showcasing the kind of football we know they’re capable of.
Defensively, we remained solid. Even when Coven managed to break through, Alex and Erin were quick to recover and snuff out danger, allowing Miles and Josh to push higher and support the attack. Their balance between defence and transition was spot on.
Tactical Adjustment and Late Goal
Midway through the half, we made a tactical switch to a five-at-the-back formation to accommodate Ethan and counter Coven’s pace. While the intention was sound, the change inadvertently caused our midfield to drop too deep, creating a back seven and leaving space in central areas. Coven capitalised on this lapse and pulled one back. It was a frustrating moment given how hard our midfield had worked all game.
Final Thoughts
Despite the goal conceded, we were clearly the better side across the ninety minutes. We dominated possession, strung together more passes, and created the clearer chances. We’re waiting on the VEO footage to confirm the stats and to see whether an earlier effort crossed the line, which could have made it 4–1.
Regardless, the team should be proud. They showed resilience, adaptability, and flashes of real quality. We now head into a short break before turning our focus to the upcoming cup fixture. Plenty to build on and plenty to be excited about.
