A game of character, resilience and digging deep
We came away with a hard-fought 3–2 victory against Nuneaton Town Juniors in a game where the boys showed plenty of character, particularly when things weren’t quite clicking.
We started the game strongly and were the better side during the opening 20 minutes. We were moving the ball well, creating opportunities and putting Nuneaton under pressure. The pressure eventually paid off when Maurice opened the scoring, finishing from a cross to give us a deserved 1–0 lead.
As the first half progressed, Nuneaton grew into the game and managed to equalise towards the end of the half. There was a foul in the build-up that we felt should have been given, but the referee chose not to award it, and Nuneaton went on to score.
Half-time: Rushall Village 1–1 Nuneaton Town Juniors
At half-time, we spoke to the lads about the need to regain control of the game and, most importantly, to be confident with the ball. We knew we had the ability to play our football, but we needed to show that belief.
The second half started a little flat from us, and Nuneaton took advantage, taking the lead with a scrappy goal inside the box to make it 2–1.
However, the response from the boys was excellent.
Soon after, we were awarded a free kick. Jack stepped up and struck it towards goal. It looked as though the keeper had it covered, but he spilled the ball and it rolled into the back of the net.
2–2!
That goal seemed to light a fire in the boys.
We suddenly found another gear, and the winning goal was a moment of real quality. Rio produced a beautiful pass, which was met brilliantly by Aaron on the volley. The connection was perfect, and the ball sailed past the keeper and into the net.
3–2 Rushall!
From there, the boys had to dig deep. Nuneaton pushed for an equaliser, but we showed determination, battled for every ball and defended their lead right through to the final whistle.
Full-time: Rushall Village FC 3–2 Nuneaton Town Juniors
Today wasn’t necessarily about playing our best football or winning in style. You can’t win every game in style, and today was about something just as important — churning out a result when things weren’t quite clicking.
The boys dug deep today and showed real character. There were moments when the game wasn’t going our way, but they kept fighting, kept believing and found a way to get over the line.
Three goals, three points and a fantastic example of resilience from the lads.
Well done, boys. 👏⚽💪
