This morning our U14s faced Chase Colts in what was always shaping up to be a highly charged encounter, the second-to-last league game of the season. For Chase, nothing less than a win would significantly boost their promotion hopes for next season. In contrast, our boys entered the match with greater flexibility: a strong result here would set up a thrilling season finale as the true decider, while even a draw would keep things firmly in our hands.
We kicked off but started somewhat nervously, looking a little shaky in the opening moments. This early uncertainty invited immediate pressure, culminating in a dangerous corner that put our box under siege. Thankfully the back line stood firm, cleared the danger decisively, and we quickly transitioned the ball forward to regain composure.
The breakthrough arrived in the 8th minute. A perfectly timed high defensive line caught the Chase attackers offside, earning us a free kick deep in our own half. Erin took it with precision, finding Maurice in space. Maurice lofted a beautifully weighted ball over the top of the Chase defense, perfectly into the path of the onrushing Rio. Rio met it first time with a crisp volley back across and straight into Maurice’s feet. With calm authority Maurice slotted the ball home to open the scoring. 1-0.
The next ten minutes saw a tightly contested, evenly balanced contest. While possession statistics and match footage later confirmed we spent far more time in Chase’s half and looked comfortable on the ball, the game remained fiercely competitive. Chase created several threatening breakaway runs that tested our resolve.
The second goal came from a moment of controversy. Zak burst down the left wing, driving deep into enemy territory before the ball was nicked off him and played back toward Chase’s box. As their defender attempted to clear under pressure, the ball bounced awkwardly at his feet and struck his outstretched arm. Despite vociferous protests from the Chase bench, the referee (positioned just yards away) had a clear view and pointed to the spot for handball. Josh stepped up confidently and dispatched the penalty with composure, sending the keeper the wrong way into the bottom right corner. 2-0.
The restart barely lasted 20 seconds. Our high press suffocated Chase immediately, forcing a turnover. Zak, continuing his menace down the flank (this time on the right), won possession and fed Maurice. A desperate lunging challenge flew in, but Maurice cleverly evaded it and threaded a precise through ball to Jareal. With ice in his veins Jareal stroked the ball clinically into the bottom left corner. 3-0, and a dream start for our boys.
At half-time the mood in the huddle was positive. We praised the maturity and quality shown in the first 35 minutes, discussed a few minor tactical tweaks, and reminded everyone that Chase would come out fighting in the second half. They had nothing to lose and promotion on the line.
Sure enough they emerged with renewed intensity. Ten minutes after the interval a slightly under-hit back-pass to Aaron was pounced upon by two charging Chase forwards. Aaron produced a superb reflex save on the first shot, only for the rebound to fall kindly for a second attempt (which he brilliantly parried again). The ball then spun out for a third bite at goal, and as Miles raced back to cover the line the ball unfortunately deflected off him into the net for an own goal. 3-1. Credit must go to Aaron for two outstanding saves and to Miles for his determination to protect the goal at all costs.
We didn’t let the setback unsettle us. At the 58-minute mark Chase exploited space with a ball over the top. Alex did brilliantly to delay the attacker, buying precious seconds, but a shot was eventually unleashed. Aaron pulled off another top-class save, only for the ball to loop agonisingly up and over him into the net. 3-2. Still, there was no panic. We knew our quality, our adaptability, and the depth of talent in the squad (even without our usual formation) gave us plenty of options to see the game out.
The response was swift and decisive. In the 66th minute Maurice showcased his tenacity on the wing. With the ball seemingly heading out of play he refused to let it die, muscling his marker off the ball with sheer power before delivering into the box. The pass found Jareal, who cleverly cut it back to Kayden. Kayden’s shot cannoned off a defender, but Rio was alert to the loose ball and smashed a clinical half-volley into the roof of the net. 4-2.
Our fifth and final goal arrived in the 70th minute. A sloppy distribution from the Chase goalkeeper rolled past a static defender, and Maurice pounced like a predator. He drove forward, shrugged off two challenges, and unleashed a powerful shot that the keeper could only parry. The rebound fell perfectly for Zak, whose follow-up effort struck the keeper and trickled toward the post, only for Jareal to arrive with perfect timing and tap home the simplest of finishes. 5-2.
This was a genuinely mature and professional performance from a very talented group. It may not have been our absolute best display, but the boys stuck rigidly to the patterns and principles we’ve drilled in training: intelligent movement off the ball, sharp passing combinations, long strings of possession, and excellent cover for teammates. The stats backed up the eye test; we dominated large periods and created the better chances.
Special mention must go to our midfield engine room of Josh and Ellis. Their partnership is becoming a real problem for opponents. They’re growing in confidence, decision-making, and clinical edge. Even with just the two of them today (no third midfielder in the hole) they dictated tempo and remained in firm control.
Our wing-backs were equally impressive, continuing to develop both attacking thrust and defensive discipline, qualities that have shone through in recent weeks.
Overall, a highly satisfying result against strong opposition. Performances like this are exactly why there’s already a waiting list for places in next season’s squad. A talented, hardworking, and coachable group, proud of you all!
Well done, lads. One more big game to finish the league season strong.
