In a thrilling encounter at home, the U14s delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, totally overwhelming a strong opponent who owed everything to their outstanding goalkeeper, rumoured to be attached to a professional academy. On another day this could easily have finished with a cricket score, but the guys in blue had to settle for a hugely impressive victory built on relentless pressing, slick combination play and rock-solid defending.
The tone was set within the first ten seconds. A short kick off from the visitors was instantly pounced on by our high press; Maurice nicked the ball, surged toward goal and forced a superb reflex save from the keeper. It was a sign of things to come.
Throughout the first half Rushall were utterly dominant, enjoying around 65% possession and pinning the opposition inside their own half. Whenever the visitors did manage to break, they came up against a back line in imperious form. Speed, strength and excellent reading of the game meant clear chances were virtually non-existent, and on the rare occasions anything slipped through, Aaron was on hand with calm, confident handling and quick distribution to launch another attack.
The breakthrough arrived from a cleverly worked free-kick routine near the halfway line. Erin’s pinpoint diagonal found its way into the danger zone, a slight deflection sent the ball bouncing behind the defensive line and Maurice raced clear, only to be brought down by a high foot raised dangerously high by the onrushing keeper. Penalty. Rio strode up and hammered a low, unstoppable drive into the corner to give us a deserved lead.
The second half was, if anything, even more one-sided. Wave after wave of Rushall attacks crashed against the visitors’ goal, with the keeper pulling off a string of world-class saves. Corners rained in, shots flashed just wide or were blocked on the line, but the pressure never let up. Midway through the half Maurice finally got his reward: a perfectly weighted through-ball sent him one-on-one, and with the keeper charging out he coolly slipped the ball underneath him and into the net.
The third goal was the pick of the bunch. Another free-kick just outside the box saw Rio curl a delicious effort toward the bottom corner, only for the keeper to somehow tip it into the path of Zak who reacted quickest, darting in to smash home the rebound and put the seal on a magnificent team performance.
Beyond the result, what stood out most was the togetherness and spirit in the squad, backed by fantastic support from the sidelines. The atmosphere was electric yet respectful, exactly the welcoming environment we always aim to create at Rushall, and both sets of players left the pitch to warm applause.
**Stand-out performers:
- Josh at left-back was immense. Battling through growing pains, he completely shut down his flank, making crucial interception after interception and never allowing the opposition to exploit space behind him. One of his very best games in a Rushall shirt.
- Rio was simply unplayable at times. Strong, quick, direct and a constant menace, he was fouled repeatedly (often cynically as last man) yet kept his composure throughout, scoring once, winning a penalty and creating countless other openings.
Six league games unbeaten, and performances getting better every week. This group is something special. Keep this up!
