Match Report – Rushall v Darlaston Town Eagles.
Friendly matches are a great opportunity to experiment with different tactics and give players experience in new positions. Unfortunately, this game did not begin as planned. One player failed to turn up, while another was not feeling well enough to start in the starting eleven. Adjustments had to be made quickly and the team set up in a 4-4-2 formation.
Rushall started slowly, appearing second to every ball and lacking the spirit and determination needed to compete. This sluggish start eventually led to confusion at the back, allowing the opposition to capitalise and take the lead, making it 1–0.
A change in formation and some positional switches gradually brought more energy into the team. Rushall began showing greater determination and were rewarded with a penalty, which Josh confidently converted to level the score at 1–1 going into half-time.
The players were called in immediately, where some very honest and harsh words were shared. From a manager’s perspective, losing a game is never the main issue as long as every player gives their best. Unfortunately, the first-half performance was far from that standard. The players acknowledged this, and a completely different Rushall team emerged for the second half.
The improvement was clear. The team fought harder for every ball, and the passing and link-up play improved significantly. This led to a well-worked move that began with Miles, whose excellent pass found Jareal, who finished calmly to give Rushall a 2–1 lead.
With the passion and energy restored, it became easier to rotate players and try them in different positions while maintaining a good level of performance. The remainder of the game was played at a much higher standard than the first half.
For today’s awards, it was a joint decision from the parents between Miles and Ellis, who were both instrumental throughout the match and thoroughly deserved their trophies.
