The U14s returned from the Easter break with renewed energy and purpose as they faced Wake Green Amateur on Saturday.
After a tough run of Saturday and Sunday football prior to the break, the boys responded excellently to a changed formation and fresh tactical instructions. From the first whistle, it was clear they were playing for each other.
The first half was closely contested and largely even. While we matched Wake Green well, we gave them too much time and space on the ball, allowing their quick forward players to cause occasional problems. However, we remained disciplined in our shape and were rewarded for our patience when a bouncing ball fell kindly to Jareal. His initial shot was well saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell straight back to him, and he made no mistake with the follow-up to give us a 1-0 lead.
At half-time, we addressed a few key tactical points, particularly around our transitions and winning the ball back higher up the pitch. The message clearly hit home.
The second half saw a transformed performance. The energy, aggression, and intensity were outstanding. We successfully limited the opposition’s time and space, forcing them into long balls and very few clear opportunities. Our defensive line stood firm, while the midfield worked incredibly hard to win second balls, intercept passing lanes, and launch quick, accurate forward passes into the front three.
One such move led to our second goal. Riley unleashed a powerful long-range effort, attempting to lob the keeper. The goalkeeper managed to get his fingertips to it, but the ball dropped perfectly for the onrushing Aaron, who calmly slotted it home to make it 2-0.
Overall, it was a very pleasing performance to watch. The boys produced some excellent football at times, with smart triangle play, good movement, composure on the ball, and a strong blend of skill and aggression. A well-deserved three points and a positive way to start back after the Easter break.
