Rushall Village U14 MJPL 5-3 Sutton United FC

21 February 2026 | RVFC
Youth football match at Rushall Village Football Club under floodlights.

Coming off a string of tough defeats, including a disappointing loss to these same Sutton United opponents just a week earlier, our U14 MJPL boys arrived with fire in their bellies. Last time out, we were outplayed and made Sutton look like seasoned pros. This rematch was our chance to rewrite the script – and under brilliant floodlights, with an electric crowd roaring them on, the lads delivered a performance full of heart, skill, and resilience.

Sutton kicked off aggressively, deploying a high-intensity PSG-style routine to press us deep and win the ball high up the pitch. But our boys were switched on: we read the press, stayed composed on the ball, and escaped cleverly into wide channels time and again. We did lean heavily on one flank (a reminder to keep scanning more), but the intent was clear – we dominated territory and forced Sutton onto the back foot for long periods.

The opener arrived in the 15th minute through sheer tenacity. Maurice, Jareal, and Tommie swarmed the Sutton goalkeeper with intelligent, coordinated pressure, forcing a hurried clearance that went straight to a loose ball. Tommie showed quick feet with a cheeky backheel flick into Maurice’s path – Maurice unleashed a thunderous drive that the keeper parried brilliantly, only for the rebound to drop perfectly for Rio. He met it sweetly on the volley, lifting it over the stranded keeper into the net. 1-0 Rushall! The bench erupted – the breakthrough we craved.

Sutton hit back almost immediately. They forced a corner, and after a dangerous lobbed delivery was volleyed against Freddie (winning another corner), our defence stood firm to clear. But moments later, their No.7 threaded a through ball that caught us flat – despite the missed offside (thankfully backed up by VEO footage), the forward raced clear. Our recovery defending was frantic, but the last man wasn’t covered, and Sutton slotted home clinically. 1-1.

Rushall refused to wilt. The response was immediate and full of passion. Rudi threw a pinpoint diagonal ball to Freddie, who used clever body feint to spin his marker, then laid it off wide to Rio. Rio powered forward with explosive strength, shrugging off two challenges like they weren’t there before driving centrally and finding Tommie on the inside. Tommie’s first-time pass back outside the box was inch-perfect for Maurice, who rifled a stunning first-time strike that arrowed into the top corner – the net rippled gloriously. 2-1 Rushall!

We kept the momentum, but fatigue and a momentary lapse cost us on a swift Sutton counter. A long ball sailed over the top; Rudi advanced to sweep, but his clearance cannoned off Alex and fell kindly to their forward, who finished coolly into the empty net. 2-2. Frustrating, but the lads stayed heads-up.

Approaching half-time, we were still the better side – pushing Sutton deep, creating chances, and looking dangerous. Josh was fouled just inside the Sutton half, earning a free-kick in a dangerous position. With confidence surging, he took a deep breath, measured his run-up, and whipped a magnificent, dipping curler that sailed up and over the despairing keeper into the far top corner. An absolute worldie – genuine goal-of-the-season contender! 3-2 Rushall at the interval.

Second half: Sutton came out with renewed purpose. In the 66th minute, a quick move down their wing ended with a low driven cross that sliced through our box. We were caught narrow again, and despite heroic blocks earlier, the ball found its way in for 3-3. Two similar concessions stung – defenders had worked tirelessly, but legs were tiring, and small errors crept in against quality opposition.

That never-say-die attitude kicked in harder than ever. We turned up the intensity: relentless pressing, quick transitions, and counter after counter. Maurice made a surging run into the box, beat his man, and was cynically clipped from behind – clear penalty! Josh stepped up under huge pressure, cool as ice, and stroked it low into the bottom corner. 4-3 Rushall! Two for him on the night – clutch.

The fifth and final goal was pure team football at its best. Steven launched a long throw-in that dropped to Maurice. He played a sharp one-two with Tommie, burst forward with the ball glued to his foot, then slid it wide to Rio. Surrounded by five defenders, Rio showed incredible composure – using feints, shoulder drops, and quick changes of direction to bamboozle them all before whipping a dangerous ball back across the six-yard box. Maurice arrived like an express train to smash it home with laser-like precision. 5-3 Rushall! Game sealed.

What a night. The boys showed they belong at this level – cohesion building, relationships strengthening, and belief skyrocketing after recent setbacks. Every player contributed: the pressers, the creators, the finishers, the defenders who battled to the end, and the subs who kept energy high.

Special mentions: Rio’s strength and flair, Maurice’s clinical edge (two goals and endless running), Josh’s composure and that screamer, Tommie’s intelligence in link-up, Rudi’s sweeping, Freddie’s turns, and the whole squad’s unbreakable spirit.

Massively proud coaches, parents, and supporters. This is what Rushall Village U14 MJPL is about.
