What a game.
Today, the champions of Division 1 rolled into Abbey Park, bringing with them a reputation and a record that could easily have made our lads nervous before kick-off.
There was certainly some apprehension beforehand, with the players knowing they were facing a very strong, physical and experienced Sportsco side. But our message to the lads was simple: we deserve to be playing at this level.
We knew we couldn’t control what Sportsco would bring, but we could control our own attitude, our effort, our discipline and our shape. The challenge was to match their intensity and believe in ourselves.
And that’s exactly what the lads did.
First Half
We made a tactical change at the start of the game, adding an extra midfielder to help us stay compact and absorb some of the pressure we expected Sportsco to put on us.
For the opening period, we had to work extremely hard without the ball. The lads remained disciplined, held their positions and made it difficult for Sportsco to play through us.
As the half progressed, however, we began to notice something.
There was space for our attackers to exploit.
Following a couple of changes and a switch in formation, we started to get more of a foothold in the game. Suddenly, our pace in attacking areas was causing Sportsco problems, particularly when we won the ball and transitioned quickly.
We began creating chances, getting forward with confidence and asking questions of their defence.
For a side that had arrived with such a strong reputation, Sportsco were suddenly having to worry about us.
The lads continued to work incredibly hard, and despite the pressure we had faced early on, we went into the break level.
Half-time: Rushall Village 0β0 Sportsco
Second Half
The second half followed a similar pattern.
Our shape remained excellent, the players continued to follow the game plan and Sportsco were struggling to find a way through us.
We were disciplined without the ball and dangerous when we broke forward, with our pace causing them plenty of problems.
Unfortunately, football can sometimes be incredibly cruel.
From a Sportsco corner, we switched off for the first and only time during the entire game.
They found a free header and converted it.
Rushall Village 0 – 1 Sportsco.
It would have been easy for the lads to feel sorry for themselves after putting so much into the game, but they didn’t.
Instead, they responded by increasing the pressure.
We got back on top, continued to attack and created four or five really good opportunities to get ourselves back into the game. On another day, at least one of those chances finds the back of the net.
But today just wasn’t that day.
The final whistle eventually came, leaving us with a 0β1 defeat, but a performance that deserved far more.
A Performance We Can Be Proud Of
Sometimes football doesn’t give you what your performance deserves.
Today was one of those days.
As a coaching team, we genuinely couldn’t be prouder of every single player who stepped onto that pitch.
The effort was outstanding.
The determination was outstanding.
The discipline was outstanding.
The players showed grit, skill and, most importantly, a real willingness to fight for each other in the right way.
There were also difficult moments during the game and after the final whistle, with incidents involving Sportsco players that we felt crossed the line of what should be expected in a youth football environment. Our players were subjected to physical challenges that went beyond what we would consider acceptable, and there was abusive language directed towards our supporters.
Following the final whistle, tensions also escalated, including an a physical assault on one of our players.
What deserves huge credit, however, is how our lads responded.
They didn’t get involved.
They didn’t retaliate.
They walked away.
That shows the character of this group and reflects the standards we are trying to build at Rushall Village.
Credit also goes to the referee, who we felt handled what was a challenging game very well.

π Parents’ Player of the Match β Xave
A fantastic performance at the back. Xave was a mountain today, attacking everything that came his way and matching Sportsco physically throughout the game. He was strong, committed and gave everything for the team.
β Managers’ Player of the Match β Alex
Another outstanding captain’s performance. Alex fought for everything, led by example and formed an excellent partnership alongside Xave. A performance full of determination, leadership and commitment.
Final Thoughts
The result will obviously hurt because the lads deserved something from the game.
But performances like this show exactly what this group is capable of.
Against the reigning Division 1 champions, our players stood toe-to-toe with them, stayed disciplined, created chances and made them work incredibly hard for their victory.
That is something to be proud of.
Keep playing like this, keep working for each other and keep believing.
The results will come. πͺπ§‘π€β½
