Rushall Village U14s 2-2 Lichfield City
Walsall Junior Youth League – Sunday Match Report
Last Sunday, our U14s took on the formidable Lichfield City – the undefeated league leaders who had powered through the season without a single loss or draw, making them the standout team in the Walsall Junior Youth League. After two intense midweek training sessions drilling defensive shape, pressing triggers, and exploiting their high line, we arrived at the game confident we could at least make it competitive. What we delivered was something far greater: a performance that earned us a hard-fought share of the points against the division’s top side.
The match kicked off with Rushall in the ascendancy. We dominated possession and territory early on, pressing aggressively and winning duels all over the pitch. The breakthrough came in the 12th minute from a swift counter-attack. A strong aerial challenge by Rushall won possession from a Lichfield throw-in deep in our half. Ellis picked up the loose ball and played a crisp pass into Maurice’s feet. Maurice turned quickly and threaded an accurate ball out wide to Rio, who used his physicality to hold off two defenders before driving infield and slipping a perfectly weighted pass through to our new signing in midfield, Josh. Josh showed excellent vision to release Maurice again in behind — his low shot was brilliantly parried by the Lichfield keeper, but Zak reacted quickest to smash home the rebound. 1-0 Rushall.
We continued to control the game for the next 20 minutes or so, creating further opportunities while limiting Lichfield to long-range efforts. However, just before half-time, a through ball caught our back line slightly flat (with strong questions over the offside decision), allowing a Lichfield forward to toe-poke the ball past our keeper into the far corner. 1-1 — a frustrating equaliser against the run of play.
The half-time team talk focused on regaining compactness: closing down spaces quicker in midfield, staying tighter as a unit, and eliminating the channels they were starting to exploit. The second half was a proper end-to-end contest of high-quality youth football. Both sides created clear chances, but outstanding goalkeeping at both ends kept the scoreline level for long periods. Our defence looked a touch unsettled and out of sync at times — we were stretched on transitions — but the boys showed real resilience and character to stay in the fight.
The decisive moment arrived around the 61st minute. Rio, on a mission to drive into dangerous areas near the box, was cynically taken down just outside the penalty area. He dusted himself off, stepped up, and curled a superb left-footed free-kick over the wall and into the top corner — an absolute stunner. 2-1 Rushall.
With victory in sight, the game turned in the dying minutes. Lichfield were awarded a free-kick just inside our half after a late challenge. One of their more experienced players stepped up and unleashed an absolute thunderbolt — powerful, dipping, and arrowed with pinpoint accuracy straight over our keeper and under the bar. A goal worthy of levelling any game. 2-2.
A draw against the unbeaten table-toppers felt every bit like a win. Lichfield had dominated the league all season, yet Rushall became the only team this campaign to take points off them — a massive statement of intent. The result bolsters our position in second place and keeps our push for runners-up spot firmly in our control. One more strong performance against next weekend’s opponents should seal it.
This was a fantastic collective display — outstanding commitment, quality on the ball, and never-say-die spirit from every player. We’re incredibly proud of the lads and how far they’ve come. Moments like this remind everyone why youth football at Rushall Village is so special.
Well done, team — that was one to remember. On to the next one!
