After an extended break over the Christmas period, followed by several weeks of frustrating postponements due to poor weather, it was a welcome relief for the squad to finally return to action. The boys enjoyed a full week of focused, high-quality training sessions, building sharpness and confidence ahead of our first-ever MJPL Cup tie in the Midland Junior Premier League competition.
The conditions were ideal: bright sunshine and a soft, wet pitch that encouraged quick, flowing football – the exact style we’ve been drilling all week. The surface allowed the ball to zip around nicely, suiting our emphasis on sharp passing, intelligent movement off the ball, and dynamic attacking play.
The opening 30 minutes felt like shaking off the rust after the layoff, but the intensity was immediate and impressive. The high-energy pressing and work rate we’d demanded in training translated perfectly onto the pitch. Our midfield tweaks – better positioning, quicker combinations, and more aggressive forward runs – gave us clear control in the engine room, allowing us to dominate possession and push higher up the field.
As the first half drew to a close, we earned a dangerous corner. Josh stepped up and delivered a perfectly whipped inswinging cross. The opposition initially cleared it, but the ball ricocheted across the six-yard box where Rio reacted quickest. He showed excellent composure to slot it calmly into the bottom corner. 1-0 at the break – a deserved lead built on our growing dominance.
The second half began with a couple of tactical adjustments and personnel changes to unlock more space and maintain freshness. However, Wyrley – a well-organized side – came out flying and caught us cold. Just seven minutes in, they leveled from a corner: the delivery evaded everyone and rolled invitingly to the back post for a simple tap-in. 1-1.
It was a wake-up call. The current shape wasn’t giving us the control we needed, so we swiftly switched formation again. This adjustment added defensive solidity where we were vulnerable while preserving our attacking threat. We regained the initiative, re-establishing the first-half pattern of sustained pressure in the opposition half, winning second balls, and creating overloads out wide.
Around the midpoint of the second half, a moment of quality turned the game. A superb long diagonal ball found Rio in space; he was clumsily fouled, earning a free kick in a promising position. Jack stepped up and unleashed a thunderous, dipping strike that sailed over the wall and nestled perfectly into the top of the net. 2-1 – a real moment of individual brilliance.
The boys kept pushing for a cushion. With just seven minutes remaining, Jack picked up the ball in midfield, drove purposefully forward, and threaded a precise pass into Maurice. His initial shot was brilliantly saved by the Wyrley keeper, but Maurice followed up instinctively and tapped home the rebound from close range. 3-1.
It wasn’t entirely one-sided – Wyrley posed a genuine threat throughout and tested us with nine shots in total but Rudi in goal was outstanding. His incredible reflexes, brave stops, and quick distribution kept the scoreline intact, limiting them to just the one goal.
Defensively, the back line was rock-solid. Our overlapping wing-backs provided constant width and support in attack while tracking back diligently. The midfield trio worked tirelessly as the team’s engine – breaking up play, recycling possession, and driving us forward.
Overall, this was a thoroughly entertaining, high-quality cup tie that showcased the progress the squad has made. A hard-fought but fully deserved victory secures our place in the next round of the MJPL Cup. Well done to every player – onto the next challenge!
