This weekend, our U14 MJPL squad made the long journey to Leek Town to face one of the most experienced teams in the league. Leek finished second overall last season, and we knew this would be our toughest challenge yet. While we are still finding our feet in this competitive environment, the boys approached the game with heart and determination.
The pitch was expansive, which suited Leek’s style of play. Their positional discipline stretched us across the field, and although we worked hard to maintain our shape, we were often chasing the ball. We managed to win possession on several occasions, but struggled to make meaningful use of it. Too often, our play led to goal kicks or allowed Leek to counter with speed and precision.
Despite a relatively steady start, a few early mistakes gave Leek the advantage. The score at half-time was respectable considering the quality of the opposition, but the second half proved more difficult. Leek introduced faster players and applied more pressure, which led to further errors and unnecessary turnovers. We were punished for giving the ball away and conceded more goals as a result.
Although the result was disappointing, the performance had its positives. It was not our best showing, and we know we are capable of much better, but the boys never gave up. The support from parents was unwavering, and the team came off the pitch united and resilient. Rather than feeling disheartened, they showed a sense of togetherness that reflects the spirit of this squad.
We expected tough results in these early months as we adjust to the demands of the MJPL. We are realistic about our position in the league and understand that we are not chasing top ten or top thirty finishes this season. What matters most is that the boys enjoy their football, continue learning, and grow together as a team. Their commitment, attitude, and camaraderie are what make this journey worthwhile.
We will take the lessons from this match, regroup, and return stronger.
